Angela's Ashes

Angela's Ashes was my second foray into "Nonfiction". Luckily this book read much like a work of fiction. Frank McCourt's recounting of his Irish childhood was sweet and engaging. The movie was a relatively faithful adaptation of the events in the book, but it lacked some of the childish charm of McCourt's re-telling. The book's perspective matures as McCourt grows from a small boy into an intelligent, cunning teenager. This evolution would be difficult to capture on-screen. The movie also fails to convey the crushing guilt and sweet relief McCourt encounters with his first journey into physical love. All in all, a decent movie but a great book.
